Abstract:
This paper, describes the second phase of an ongoing research project dealing with the implementation of an interactive interface. It is a "hands free" instrument, utilizing a non-contact tactile feedback method based on airborne ultrasound. The three main elements/components of the interface that will be discussed in this paper are: 1. Generation of audible sound by self-demodulation of an ultrasound signal during its propagation through air; 2. The condensation of the ultrasound energy in one spatial point generating a precise tactile reproduction of the audible sound; and 3. The feed-forward method enabling a real-time intervention of the musician, by shaping the tactile (ultra)sound directly with his hands.
